ABOUT ME: Looking back at my childhood from the other side of 50 with some curiosity and life experience, I can assure you it does all start to make sense eventually. Growing up in suburban Johannesburg with three “interesting” brothers, a liberal father from New Zealand and a mother hailing from a dusty karoo sheep farm, I took the gap as soon as the opportunity arose for me to attend university in a different town. Many years later after switching from Psychology to Veterinary Science, it was during a consultation that I realised I was a lot more interested in the family dynamics of the eccentric owner than the dog with diarrhea. It was time for another change…
Having always had a fascination with the power of the mind and human behaviour, it is not surprising that my veterinary career has slowly faded into the background as I have become more and more passionate about helping people using hypnotherapy.
HOW HYPNOTHERAPY WORKS:The powerful Subconscious mind is the seat of our emotions, beliefs and imagination. It is key to our automatic behaviours and habits. When someone pushes our buttons it means that an emotion is triggered from way back that was associated with a particular memory, real or imagined. In a second, your heart can speed up and you can be ready to argue, cry or run for it. Emotions are neuro-physiological reactions that can be triggered by a thought. This mind -body connection is what we are most interested in when using hypnosis for stress related conditions.
During hypnotherapy it is possible to change those automatic reactions to triggers as well as retrain the brain to have other healthier thoughts. When we experience this type of learning in a hypnotic state of mind it is one of the most effective ways to rewire the brain (neuroplasticity). This means that a new automatic behaviour in reaction to a trigger becomes possible and an empowering feeling replaces the emotion.
CAN ANYONE BE HYPNOTISED? Absolutely. Some people are fortunate and can access this state of mind very easily and deeply, while others take a bit longer and some may only achieve a light trance. Light trance is often all that is needed to experience the therapeutic benefits. Just as with any other skill it becomes easier with practise and each time you are hypnotised it may feel quite different.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL YOU NEED? That all depends on you and what you are wanting to achieve. Generally, the more specific the issue the fewer the sessions. Some people only need two or three, and others choose to come regularly or irregularly as they gain more insight into themselves and enjoy the benefits. The sessions are a learning experience and often the catalyst to start processes that you are able to build on and continue on your own, consciously as well as subconsciously.
